Southside College of Health Sciences provides a robust clinical simulation space for their students. The Clinical Simulation & Learning Center (CSLC) provides a variety of simulation-based learning events utilizing a clinically realistic space. Modalities include high fidelity manikins, standardized patients, real clinical equipment, and structured scenarios which follow International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) standards.
Mission:
The Clinical Simulation & Learning Center will provide the highest quality service and education in a respectful learning environment for the people of Bon Secours and our community, to improve the health and well-being of those in need.
Vision:
The Clinical Simulation & Learning Center will be a collaborative space where students improved their practice, faculty incorporate innovative learning strategies, and our associates want to work.
Goals:
- Maintain a respectful and safe learning environment that accurately simulates health care experiences.
- Develop and utilize adaptable simulation scenarios in collaboration with the subject matter experts that are reflective of best practices in healthcare.
- Support the Clinical Transformation initiatives of the Bon Secours Mercy Health ministry.
- Expand the Learning Center’s visibility and accessibility within the community by providing learning opportunities and guidance.
The CSLC is comprised of skills labs, and a high-fidelity simulation area located on the first floor of 430 Clairmont Court Suite 121. Clinical Units within the Center mirror actual hospital units in look and equipment, so students have the added benefit of acclimating to the hospital environment and technology.
Skills Lab
The skills lab feature Laerdal’s Nursing Anne with VitalSim™ technology and Nursing Kelly with VitalSim™ technology. The eight-bed Nursing skills lab is fully equipped with a variety of manikins and equipment used in patient care, and the eight bay health assessment lab is set up with exam tables and the equipment needed for patient assessment.
High Fidelity Simulation Area
In the high-fidelity Simulation area, the floor plan is intended to imitate an acute care unit and has a nurse’s station, two exam rooms, four simulation rooms, and four debriefing rooms.
Entering the simulation hospital, you will encounter the nurses’ station complete with a medication dispenser, glucometer, computer, phones, and normal supplies found in a nurse’s station. There is an alcove for the code cart, procedure carts, and isolation carts.
The exam rooms are outfitted with exam tables, a counter and sink, exam stool, exam lights, and computer. These rooms will be utilized for student physical exam practice and check offs utilizing Standardized Patients.
Each of the four high fidelity simulation rooms is equipped with technologically advanced, life-like manikins and there are two control rooms where the facilitators and technicians will control the flow of the simulation-based learning events. The CSLC has a variety of manikins including Laerdal Nursing Anne Simulator, Laerdal SimMom, Laerdal SimBaby. The units are designed to mirror actual hospital units in look and equipment, so students have the added benefit of acclimating to the hospital environment and technology. There are computers for each room and the facility is set up with an electronic medical record for use during simulations. All of the rooms in the simulation hospital are equipped with video capture equipment for recording educational activities for later review.
In addition to manikin-based practice, the CSLC also has a robust Standardized Patient program where live specially trained actors play various roles in a simulation scenario.
